Fine Arts
Band Ensemble
The course offers intermediate to advanced musical training in wood instruments, brass instruments, guitar, bass guitar, and percussion. The ensemble experience includes performances in classical jazz, modern, and sacred music. By invitation or permission of the teacher.
Choir
This course is the study and public performance of choral music utilizing basic sight reading and music theory. By invitation or permission of the teacher.
Drawing I
This is a classic art academy approach to the basics of drawing in black and white. Students will explore multiple methods of approach in realistic drawing with special emphasis on portraiture, still life, composition, shading, and perspective. Offered in Fall term alternative years.
Drawing II
The natural extension of drawing into color and new media including pen and ink, scratchboard, pastels, and charcoal with special emphasis on advanced drawing skills, composition, design and non-verbal communication. Offered in Spring term alternative years.
Painting I
Color and composition extended from basic watercolor and ink illustration moving into acrylics and water-based oils. Special unit on brush use in Chinese and Japanese styles of calligraphy and painting. Offered Fall term in even years.
Painting II
The continued development of painting skills moving from acrylics and oils into advanced watercolors. Special units on impasto, Impressionism, mixed media, portfolio preparation and development of a personal artistic statement. Offered Spring term on odd years.
String Ensemble
This study provides intermediate to advanced musical training in violin, viola, cello, and bass. Performances and recitals are incorporated in the study. The student must have permission of the teacher.
Textile Arts
Students will focus on the “software” of fiber and fabric. Topics include spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, knitting, crocheting, lacemaking, needlepoint, embroidery, sewing, appliqué, quilting, silk painting, rugmaking, beadwork, netting, and sprang/ macramé. The course includes special units on computer-aided design for weaving and charted designs. Students will make sampler pages for notebooks, create personal projects and participate in large-scale class projects (such as gallery doll, art-to-wear project or Renaissance costume). Offered 2004-2005 academic year.
